About Us
I'm George Schroeder, and this is my wife, Kristine. We live in St. Germain, Wisconsin on beautiful Big St. Germain Lake.
Originally from Illinois, I farmed southwest of Plainfield, IL for 40 years. I can honestly say that I farmed for that amount of time, because my mother was out cultivating corn on an IH M tractor while pregnant with me! I miss farming badly. I had planned on farming my whole life, but encroaching development forced me out.
Kristine's family, originally from Joliet, IL, owned a group of cottages on Townline Lake in Three Lakes, Wisconsin for about 20 years, finally selling them in the early 70s. She vaguely remembers visiting there as a small child, certainly never dreaming she would ever be living in the Northwoods.
Back in 1980, when I first traveled north to ride my John Deere (!) snowmobile, I absolutely fell in love with this area. I vowed that I would live in the Northwoods someday. When I brought Kristine here in the summer of 1999, she fell in love too. Heck, she saw her first shooting star her very first night here!
One of our favorite things about living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin - the abundant wildlife. We never get tired of seeing a beautiful deer (they taste good, too), a soaring bald eagle, a little red fox...we've even caught glimpses of fishers, black bears, and even a wolf. A couple years ago, there was an eagle who would visit one of our trees daily, so we started calling him "Feather Dude".
After moving to St. Germain, Wisconsin, we needed to find work, so I began working for Thelen's Masonry, owned by Fritz Thelen of Sayner, WI. I am grateful to him for helping me find my way around the construction trade in this area. Since then Kristine and I started our own business, called Northshore Dirtworks. I do small-to-medium excavation and specialize in Red Granite driveways. Kristine also taught herself to make wire-sculpted jewelry, which she sells through her website,
The Wiresculptress.
Since we've moved here, we've had many experiences in dealing with the Northwoods: some good and some not so good. While we will not disclose the not-so-good dealings, we will use all our experience to help newcomers learn a little quicker the best ways to get around, vacation, or do business here.
We don't claim to be experts - we're still learning. I believe no matter how much anyone knows about anything, you never stop learning. We hope you enjoy our website. Please check out our links page, our Lake Cam page, or our
