Finding A Northwoods Business To Deal With
Finding a business to deal with here in the Northwoods can be tricky, and sometimes it can seem impossible. The Number One problem I have heard from my own customers? Nobody gets back to them. A variation on this sorry theme is that no one shows up on time - or at all. One customer told me I was the first contractor in three years who actually showed up.
When I first purchased property here in Wisconsin's Northwoods, I didn't have any idea where to start looking for people to deal with. All I could do was ask questions. Here are my recommendations based on what I learned.
Whatever area you are moving to, or purchasing vacation property in, ask questions. Who or where do you ask? In my opinion, the best two places are the bars and/or the breakfast shops. Talk to the locals. However, many locals are slow to warm up, so don't exude "tourist attitude" :) Don't just stop at a couple of bars or restaurants, go to as many as you can! The time invested will be worth it.
A word of caution: many locals are very opinionated (not that there's anything wrong with that). But if you ask a local about who should fix your roof, and you bristle at the answer, well, they'll shut you off like a light switch. Just thank them and write it down in your book.
Another word of caution: When you finally find that great business to deal with, they will be busy. But if you can, wait for the popularly-recommended contractor. There are a lot of "fly-by-night" contractors here who will be quick to start on your project in order to lock it up, but then pull off unexpectedly to start on another one.
