Wisconsin CuriositiesWisconsin Curiosities
by Michael Feldman and Diana Cook
ISBN: 0762706228

Wisconsin Curiosities is an entertaining look at the odd, weird, wacky side of Wisconsin - from the House on the Rock, to the 16-foot-tall Mercer Loon, from the hilarious puns on the ABS Global billboard near DeForest, to the white buffalo near Janesville. There's over 125 strange and wonderful sights and events in this collection of curiosities. I was quite surprised, however, that Rhinelander's famous Hodag wasn't included.

Haunted WisconsinHaunted Wisconsin
by Michael Norman and Beth Scott
ISBN: 1931599041

Updated in 2001, this 1980 classic was the first collection of ghost stories particular to a state. This engrossing read spins tales of not only haunted houses, but haunted islands, phantom horses, and the famous (around here, anyway) Paulding Lights. (Yeah, that's in Michigan, but hey...close enough). I really enjoyed this book. By the way, Norwood Pines in Minocqua isn't in the book, but I hear it may be...haunted!

Tamarack
by Edith Roberts
published in 1940 by Bobbs-Merrill Indianapolis New York

Set during the winter of 1939-1940 in the small town of Tamarack, this novel follows young widow and mother-of-five Addie Rayburn as she deals with an unintended pregnancy, the result of a one-night-stand. It's very interesting (and infuriating!) to see how the townspeople of Tamarack react to Addie's predicament. It is said that Tamarack is modeled after an actual town in Vilas County (hmmm...wonder which one?)

I enjoyed Tamarack so much; alas, it is long out of print. I found a used copy at Abebooks.com.
